Sydney Emergency Drill, Barangaroo
More than 700 emergency workers took part in the largest ever emergency training exercise in Sydney on Sunday, August 28, 2016 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The drill simulated a Boeing 777 taking off from Sydney Airport, and crashing at Barangaroo with 500 casualties. It was the largest such exercise in the state’s history, according to Emergency Services Minister David Elliott.
It involved 12 months of planning and 15 agencies including NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, Road and Maritime Services, paramedics, transport authorities, local councils, NSW Health’s Disaster/Crisis department, Sydney Airport, air safety services and the Red Cross.
About 300 State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service volunteers role-played family and friends of those involved in the crash.
‘Today’s exercise is also about engaging with the public and displaying the coordinated emergency arrangements to demonstrate that if there was ever an incident of this magnitude, we are ready to respond to minimise the loss of life and property,’ Assistant Commissioner Fuller said.
‘Having plans is one thing, but testing those arrangements with all agencies involved in a realistic setting is imperative,’ he added.
Southern Cross Protection provided assistance with perimeter security at a neighbouring site. We are extremely honoured to be a part of this crucial operation. Well done Team NSW!
