Tuesday, 8 November 2016: The streets around Barangaroo’s Tower One were cleared and closed following an incident involving a crane atop the 217-metre-high building.

The crane left a 3.9 tonne cherry picker dangling mid-air 51 floors above the development, with police helping clear the area as a precaution.

Streets below Tower One at Barangaroo in Sydney’s busy city centre were shut down in an exclusion zone after the incident occurred at 2pm on Tuesday.

While the precinct was being evacuated, Southern Cross Protection assisted with perimeter protection around the affected site to help maintain the exclusion zone and avert public injury.

Barangaroo developer Lendlease issued a statement confirming the crane malfunction.

“We are pleased to advise that the load on the crane at Barangaroo Tower One has now been safely lowered,” Andrew Wilson, developer Lendlease’s Barangaroo managing director, said in a statement.

“Safety is always our number one priority and the precautionary exclusion zone remains in place with traffic management along the closed section of Hickson Road.”
