Southern Cross Protection is proud to support Stay Smart Online Week, an annual online security awareness campaign run by the Australian Government.
This year’s Stay Smart Online Week is being held from 10-14 October, to coincide with Cyber Security Awareness Month in the United States.
The theme is cyber safety from the lounge room to the board room, focusing on how an individual’s online behaviour in their personal life can impact their workplace, and how there is a need for organisations to engage with their employees on online security awareness.
Being smart online is all about protecting sensitive corporate and customer information, your brand and your reputation, which are the most important assets your business will own. While every business is different, raising awareness of safe online behaviour is critical, regardless of industry, the state of the market or internal circumstances. (Source)
The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Cyber Security, Dan Tehan, said cybercrime costs the Australian economy more than $1 billion a year.
“CERT Australia, the national computer emergency response team, has dealt with more than 9,000 cyber security incidents affecting Australian businesses already this year,” Mr Tehan said.
“There have been more than 74,000 cybercrimes reported to ACORN since November 2014, with online scams and fraud accounting for 42%.”
The importance of this issue hits home when you understand that 90% of Australians will be online by 2017.
So how do we reduce our risk of falling victim to online crimes?
The Australian Government’s Stay Smart Online initiative has developed two short guides to help individuals and small business owners and managers put in place some basic online security habits.
